UN warns child malnutrition at alarming levels in Sudan

The United Nations has warned that child malnutrition has reached alarming levels in Sudan, particularly in North Darfur and the Greater Kordofan region, as ongoing conflict continues to devastate food systems and basic services, Jurist News reported.

According to a recent analysis by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), acute malnutrition has exceeded critical thresholds in parts of North Darfur following the fall of El Fasher to paramilitary control in October 2025.

The IPC also reported rapidly worsening conditions in Greater Kordofan, confirming famine in Kadugli and warning of severe outcomes in Dilling and the Western Nuba Mountains. UN experts said the high malnutrition rates point to a heightened risk of excess child mortality and warned that cases are expected to rise further in 2026 if fighting continues.

The UN identified armed conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces as the main driver of the crisis, citing destroyed food production, disrupted markets, and collapsed health and water infrastructure. It called for an immediate ceasefire and expanded humanitarian access. The warning comes amid a broader humanitarian emergency, with nearly 30 million Sudanese in need of assistance as the conflict enters its third year.
