Nobel Laureates Say AI Has Not Yet Reached Fundamental Scientific Discovery

A group of leading scientists, including Nobel Prize winners and holders of other prestigious scientific awards, has warned that artificial intelligence (AI), despite its rapid advancement, still cannot independently produce major foundational scientific discoveries.

At a forum titled “AI Science: Can Artificial Intelligence Discover?”, the scientists stressed that while AI can accelerate computation and modeling of complex processes, it remains in the early stages when it comes to generating original, transformative scientific theories. They emphasized that the central role in scientific innovation still belongs to the human mind, which brings experience, creativity, interpretation and analytical ability to research—a capability AI has not matched.

Participants noted that AI tools are valuable for speeding up certain tasks, such as data processing and simulation, but without human guidance they cannot create genuine breakthroughs in science. According to reports, the discussion underlined that the decisive and leading contributions in scientific discovery remain with researchers themselves, as current AI technology lacks the independent reasoning and conceptual insight needed for foundational discoveries.

The forum’s remarks reflect broader debate in the scientific community about the limits of AI in research. While AI systems have shown promise in generating hypotheses and aiding experimentation, experts continue to stress the importance of human oversight and intellectual input in advancing scientific knowledge.
