Syria Forms New Council to Represent Shia Community Amid Political and Financial Controversy
———————————-
A new Council for Representing the Shia Community has been formed in Syria, bringing together religious, social and cultural figures to organise and represent matters concerning the country’s Shia minority, according to reports seen by the Shia Waves Agency.

The initiative was announced on January 28 by Abdullah Nizam, head of the Islamic Scholars Body for followers of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) school of thought. The council comprises 35 members and is intended to serve as a representative body during what proponents describe as a transitional phase for the community in the context of Syria’s evolving political and social landscape.

Leadership of the council is shared among Engineer Abbas al-Hamid, Sheikh Ali al-Zein and Dr. Fayez Sandouk, with lawyer Mohammad Zaki al-Nouri appointed as secretary-general and official spokesperson. The council will meet every two weeks and is set to operate initially for a six-month trial period that may be extended. It aims to coordinate with authorities on community-related issues and establish provincial committees to address local needs.

According to official statements, the formation of the council reflects the Shia community’s longstanding presence in Syria and its role in the country’s social and economic life. Supporters say the council seeks to provide clear and organised representation amid ongoing reconstruction efforts.
