Algeria Deports Record Number of Migrants to Niger in 2025
…….
Algeria deported more than 34,000 undocumented migrants to Niger during 2025, marking the highest annual total since large-scale expulsions began over a decade ago, according to a Niger-based non-governmental organization. The group said the figure reflects an intensification of deportation operations over the past year.
Alarm Phone Sahara, cited by Agence France-Presse, reported that its teams documented 34,236 deportations between January and December 2025. The organization said the total included both official and unofficial convoys, warning that the real number could be higher due to limited access to comprehensive data.
Algeria remains a major transit country for migrants from sub-Saharan Africa attempting to reach Europe and has conducted regular deportations since 2014. The NGO noted that Nigerien nationals are usually transferred through formal channels, while migrants of other nationalities are often left near the desert border, amid growing humanitarian and security concerns.
