Severe flooding triggered by heavy rainfall has forced thousands of people from their homes across Mozambique, with some residents stranded on rooftops as rising waters inundate communities, according to aid workers and witnesses, Reuters reported. Large areas have been submerged, prompting emergency rescue and relief operations.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) said more than 620,000 people have been directly affected, with at least 72,000 homes flooded. Critical infrastructure, including roads, bridges and health facilities, has suffered extensive damage, complicating humanitarian access to the worst-hit areas.

IFRC officials warned that conditions could deteriorate further as rainfall is expected to continue and dams have reached full capacity. Red Cross volunteers are using small boats to reach survivors, while South Africa has deployed a military helicopter to assist. Displaced families have sought shelter in resettlement centres as waters continue to rise.

President Daniel Chapo cancelled an overseas trip, saying saving lives was the immediate priority. Authorities drew comparisons to devastating floods in 2000, while port operations slowed but continued. Businesses reported no major disruptions, as heavy rains also affected parts of neighbouring South Africa.
