Maldives Introduces Digital System for Zakat al-Fitr Payments

The Maldives is preparing to introduce a nationwide digital system for the payment of Zakat al-Fitr, marking a significant shift in the management of the Islamic charitable obligation paid at the end of Ramadan. The initiative follows an agreement between the national Zakat authority and a local digital service provider to modernise collection methods.

Under the new system, Muslims will be able to pay Zakat al-Fitr online through secure platforms, with funds processed directly and without intermediary fees. Officials say the move will improve transparency and efficiency, ensuring faster distribution to eligible recipients across the country, particularly in the geographically dispersed island nation.
