Sudanese Paramilitary Detains Hundreds of Women in Dire Conditions
………
Reports from South Darfur indicate that Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are holding nearly 600 women, some accompanied by children, at the “Korea” prison in Nyala, the state capital. Sources describe deteriorating conditions, with severe shortages of food and clean water and prolonged detention periods, raising urgent humanitarian concerns.
According to Darfur 24, over 50 children are living inside the facility alongside their mothers, with detainees coming from multiple regions, including North, South, and Central Darfur as well as Kordofan. While the prison is primarily used to detain women, men are reportedly held temporarily before being transferred to Degris prison. Observers note a lack of basic healthcare services for both women and children, exacerbating risks to their physical well-being.
The developments occur amid a worsening humanitarian and security crisis in Darfur. Human rights groups warn that ongoing conflict, combined with minimal oversight and limited legal protections, is heightening the vulnerability of civilians, particularly women and children, and could further aggravate the region’s urgent humanitarian challenges.
