At least 25 people have been confirmed dead and 14 others are still missing after a passenger boat capsized in Yobe State in northeastern Nigeria, according to local authorities, as reported by Reuters. The incident adds to a series of deadly water transport accidents in the country.

The accident occurred on Saturday evening when a large wooden canoe travelling from Adiyani village in Jigawa State to Garbi in Yobe State overturned shortly before reaching its destination. Officials said the vessel was carrying 52 passengers at the time of the incident.

Emergency services said 13 people were rescued alive, while search and recovery efforts continue with support from neighbouring communities, security agencies and local volunteers. Police said preliminary findings indicate the canoe developed a leak, while safety regulations prohibiting night travel and overloading were allegedly ignored.

Boat accidents are frequent in Nigeria, particularly in rural areas where waterways serve as key transport routes and safety enforcement is weak. Authorities have repeatedly warned against unsafe travel practices, noting that similar incidents in recent months have claimed dozens of lives across several states.
