Global Gen Z Uprisings Shake Governments in 2025 Amid Youth-Led Protests From Kathmandu to Antananarivo

Global youth movements led by members of Generation Z played an outsized role in shaping political developments in 2025, from toppling governments to pressing long-standing demands for accountability, transparency and economic reform, according to verified reports.

In Nepal, widespread protests erupted in early September after authorities temporarily banned major social media platforms — a move young demonstrators interpreted as an attack on freedom of expression — and rallied around broader grievances including corruption and government mismanagement. Demonstrations spread nationwide, with parliament buildings and other state offices set ablaze, ultimately forcing Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli to resign. An interim government under former chief justice Sushila Karki was installed and early elections were scheduled for 2026.

Similarly in Madagascar, youth-driven demonstrations that began over utility shortages in Antananarivo broadened into calls for constitutional reform and the resignation of President Andry Rajoelina. After clashes with security forces and refusal by elite military units to fire on protesters, Rajoelina’s government dissolved parliament and faced impeachment. Transitional authorities including military leadership were put in place, pledging future elections and a constitutional process that includes young activists.

Elsewhere, mass protests involving predominantly young participants have emerged in countries such as Morocco and Mongolia, with demonstrators demanding improved public services, greater political participation, and responses to corruption and youth unemployment. In Morocco, the government introduced reforms aimed at encouraging political engagement among young citizens.

Analysts say this wave of mobilization — often coordinated via social media and decentralized networks — reflects widespread disillusionment with traditional elites and persistent economic challenges. Though not all movements have ousted governments, they have amplified youth voices on issues ranging from political reform to economic opportunity across continents.

The Gen Z protests of 2025 mark one of the most significant periods of youth-led political activism in recent history, highlighting the generational impact of digital connectivity and collective action on global governance.
