Wave of Islamophobia Targets Hijab-Wearing Women After Bondi Attack
—————————————

Muslim women, particularly those wearing hijabs, are facing a surge in Islamophobic incidents following the December 14 Bondi Beach terrorist attack, according to ABC News.

The Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) reported a near 200% increase in anti-Muslim hate incidents, with 62 cases logged since the attack. Reports include hijabs being ripped off, women egged or spat on, and vandalism at mosques and Islamic centres.

ANIC senior advisor Bilal Rauf said much of the abuse has been directed at women, causing fear and distress in the Muslim community. Local leaders, including MP Jihad Dib, and NSW Premier Chris Minns condemned the attacks, calling them “horrifying,” “disgusting,” and unacceptable. Authorities continue to monitor incidents and urge the public to report hate crimes.

The rise in Islamophobia has been linked to divisive rhetoric in some political and media circles, exacerbating community tensions.
