Greek coast guard forces rescued 131 migrants from a fishing boat south of Crete on Saturday, pushing the number of people saved in the area over the past five days to 840, Arab News reported. The operation took place about 14 nautical miles south of Gavdos, a small island off Crete, and all those rescued were safely transferred to the island.

The route from Libya to Crete remains highly dangerous, with frequent reports of drownings. The UN refugee agency says more than 16,700 people have reached Crete so far this year, more than any other Greek island, as the government continues to tighten asylum measures amid rising arrivals.
