Muslim employees of M Tag face Islamophobic treatment
————————-
Muslim employees at Grenoble’s public transport company M Tag have faced repeated Islamophobic harassment over several years, according to IQNA citing testimonies collected by the investigative outlet Mediapart and the CGT trade union. The reported incidents, dating back to 2022, include the delivery of packages containing racist and religiously offensive items such as pork products, far-right political material, threats, and Nazi symbols.
Affected staff members, including drivers and ticket inspectors, say the harassment has continued despite police complaints and management statements condemning the acts. Employees allege that internal investigations have led to limited outcomes, with disciplinary measures reportedly restricted to warnings. The CGT has criticized what it describes as a hostile work environment and is calling for stronger sanctions and systematic follow-up on discrimination reports.
Some workers have reportedly suffered serious psychological consequences, with at least one employee placed on long-term sick leave following a threatening incident. The union recently filed a new complaint after prayer rugs belonging to Muslim employees were allegedly thrown away and soiled at a company facility.
The situation at M Tag reflects a broader national trend. Data from France’s Ministry of the Interior show a 75 percent rise in recorded anti-Muslim acts in the first five months of 2025 compared with the same period in 2024. Other monitoring bodies and the Defender of Rights have also reported rising discrimination against Muslims, particularly in employment, alongside low rates of formal complaints and persistent misunderstandings surrounding secularism.
