New York Mayor-Elect Mamdani Prioritizes Fight Against Islamophobia and Anti-Palestinian Racism

New York City mayor-elect Zahran Mamdani has identified combating Islamophobia and racism targeting Palestinians as a key priority ahead of his inauguration on January 1, 2026. According to IQNA citing the Journalist Post, Mamdani has pledged to act quickly against hate speech and discrimination, signaling that these issues will be central to his early agenda in office.
In a post on the X platform, Mamdani stated that addressing Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian racism would be among his first actions as mayor. His remarks drew wide media attention and were framed as a response to recent events that alarmed academic and human rights communities in the United States.
Mamdani, who will succeed Eric Adams, emphasized that New York City cannot tolerate incitement to hatred based on religion or ethnic origin. His comments followed heightened tensions after a December 13 armed attack at Brown University in Providence that left two people dead and nine injured.
In the aftermath, online users falsely accused Mostafa Kharboush, a Palestinian student, circulating an old photo of him wearing a keffiyeh. Despite the lack of evidence, he reportedly faced death threats and racist abuse linked solely to his appearance.
