Non-Violence Organization Hails UK’s New “Blue Light Hijab” as a Landmark for Inclusion

Earlier this month, the Leicestershire Police force officially launched the production and distribution of a pioneering “Blue Light Hijab,” a magnetic head-covering designed to enhance the safety and dignity of Muslim women in frontline policing. Developed in partnership with De Montfort University (DMU) over a three-year research period, the garment features a patented quick-release magnetic system. This design ensures that the hijab stays securely in place during regular duties but detaches instantly if grabbed or pulled during a confrontation, effectively eliminating the risk of strangulation while allowing the officer to maintain her religious modesty.

In a formal declaration following the launch, the Non-Violence Organization (FreeMuslim) praised the development as a “historic milestone” for religious freedom and social justice. The organization emphasized that this initiative represents a profound shift toward modern, inclusive policing that respects the diverse spiritual needs of its workforce. By integrating religious requirements with high-level personal protective equipment (PPE), FreeMuslim stated that the United Kingdom is providing a global model for how state institutions can empower minority communities. The group particularly highlighted that such measures are vital in protecting the rights and safety of Muslim women who frequently face intersectional challenges of both gender and faith in the public sector.
