Office of Grand Ayatollah Shirazi Delivers Winter Fuel to Vulnerable Families in Northern Afghanistan

The office of the Supreme Religious Authority, Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Sadiq al-Husseini al-Shirazi, has launched the first phase of its annual winter relief program in Afghanistan, providing heating fuel to vulnerable families in the city of Mazar-e-Sharif. The initiative is being implemented in cooperation with the Al-Mustafa Charitable Foundation amid severe winter conditions and a sharp rise in fuel prices.
According to a statement, hundreds of low-income households benefited from the initial distribution, with priority given to families headed by widows, as well as households caring for orphans and elderly members. Coal remains a primary source of heating for many Afghan families during winter. The organizers said the project reflects a broader humanitarian effort to support those most affected by Afghanistan’s ongoing economic crisis.
The country has faced soaring fuel costs this winter, making basic heating unaffordable for many households. International agencies estimate that millions of Afghans will require humanitarian assistance in 2025, with children and older people particularly vulnerable to health risks linked to cold weather and inadequate shelter. The fuel distribution aims to ease part of the burden facing affected families.
