UNRWA Faces “Unprecedented” Media Attacks and Threats of Dissolution
——————————
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has officially warned that it is the target of a coordinated and sustained disinformation campaign that has reached “unseen levels” over the past two years, Anadolu Agency reported.
According to a statement released on December 21, 2025, by Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini, these attacks are part of a broader effort to dismantle the agency’s mandate.
According to reports from Anadolu Agency and official UN sources, UNRWA warned that the dissolution of the agency without a lasting political solution would have catastrophic consequences. Such a move would strip the most destitute Palestinian refugees of their only access to essential services, including schooling and healthcare, as well as further aggravate the enduring poverty in the region.
UNRWA emphasized that its existence is a result of the lack of a political resolution, not the cause of it. According to the agency, dismantling its infrastructure would not end the legal status of refugees but would instead cause “real harm” to the most vulnerable populations in the Middle East.
