Mass Graves Unearthed in Syria Highlight Scale of Wartime Abuses
………………
New documentation by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights indicates that around 50 mass graves containing the remains of at least 2,865 people have been uncovered across Syria since the collapse of Ba’ath Party rule, underscoring the extent of violations committed during the conflict.
The graves span multiple phases of the war that erupted in 2011, a period marked by widespread abuses including mass killings, arbitrary detention, and enforced disappearances. Recent discoveries have been reported in several governorates, particularly Daraa, Homs, Hama, and Deir ez-Zor.
According to the Observatory, the sites hold the remains of hundreds of victims, among them women, children, and men who were killed or went missing under violent circumstances. Human rights groups say the findings reinforce evidence of war crimes and crimes against humanity, renewing calls for accountability and for clarifying the fate of thousands of people still listed as missing.
