Deadly Sumatra Flood Halts Friday Prayers, Displaces Hundreds of Thousands

A devastating flood on Indonesia’s Sumatra island has disrupted daily life and prevented worshippers from reaching mosques, forcing the suspension of Friday prayers in affected areas.

According to the Shia Waves Agency, citing Reuters, in the Dar al-Mukhlesin area the entrance to a mosque was completely blocked by massive piles of uprooted tree trunks, making it impossible to hold Friday congregational prayers.

The flooding, which tore through large swathes of northern Sumatra and Aceh province, uprooted thousands of trees and caused widespread destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Authorities said the disaster is among the most severe to hit the region in recent years, leaving hundreds of thousands of people displaced and inflicting significant human and material losses.

Emergency services and local communities are continuing relief efforts as access to several areas remains limited due to debris and damaged roads.
