Algeria to Launch Training Program for Imams on Combating Violence Against Women

Algeria will soon launch a national training program for imams and religious guides aimed at combating violence against women, IQNA reported citing the Minister of Religious Affairs and Endowments, Youcef Belmehdi.

Speaking at a study day in Algiers organised in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) under the theme “Protection against violence against women and girls,” Belmehdi said the initiative will focus on prevention, counselling and reconciliation within mosques. An official guidance document will also be distributed to mosques nationwide, encouraging conflict resolution based on Quranic principles.

The minister stressed the role of mosques and reconciliation committees in addressing family disputes and preserving social cohesion, noting that violence against women is incompatible with Islamic teachings and Algerian values. He cited drug abuse as a key factor aggravating domestic violence and called for stronger awareness campaigns.

UNFPA’s Resident Representative in Algeria, Faïza Ben Driss, highlighted the partnership with the ministry and underscored the growing threat of digital violence targeting women and girls. She said sermons and religious guidance can play a vital role in promoting respect for women, countering online abuse and fostering safer communities.
