Grand Ayatollah Shirazi: During Rule of Holy Prophet and Imam Ali, Not Even a Span of Land Was Sold

The daily scholarly session of Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Sadiq Husayni Shirazi was held on Saturday, the 14th of Jumada al-Thani 1447.

As in previous sessions, the Supreme Marja answered attendees’ questions on various jurisprudential issues.

Grand Ayatollah Shirazi emphasized that selling unowned land is not legitimate, stating that governments do not possess ownership of land and therefore cannot lawfully sell it.

He cited a hadith of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his pure family): “The land belongs to God and to those who cultivate it,” explaining that ownership rests with those who develop the land, not with the ruling authorities.

He further noted that during the era of the Infallibles, including the ten-year governance of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) and the five-year rule of Imam Ali (peace be upon him), not even a span of land was sold.
