UN: Famine emerging in Sudan’s Kordofan region as civilians ‘face growing dangers’

The United Nations has warned that civilians across Sudan’s Kordofan region are facing escalating dangers as violence intensifies, with humanitarian agencies reporting famine conditions, ongoing sieges, and repeated attacks on civilians and aid workers, Anadolu Agency reported.

UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said the operational humanitarian country team condemned the violence and ongoing sieges that have cut off multiple cities, including Dilling and Kadugli. Residents in these areas face extreme hardship, restricted movement, and limited access to essential services. Famine conditions have reportedly emerged in Kadugli, while attacks have been documented in Babanusa, West Kordofan.

Dujarric highlighted that sustained violence is restricting farmers’ access to fields and markets, threatening food security across the Kordofan states. He urged all parties to protect civilians, medical personnel, and humanitarian workers delivering life-saving aid. Humanitarian staff face significant risks while attempting to reach 1.1 million people in need.

Meanwhile, in North Darfur, Save the Children reported that over 43,000 people displaced from El-Fasher since late October have arrived in Korma town and Silk camp, straining host communities. The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, ongoing since April 2023, has killed at least 40,000 people and displaced roughly 12 million.
