Tajikistan Draws a Red Line: No Shelter for Afghan Government Opponents

During a high-level visit by a Tajik delegation to Afghanistan’s Kunduz province, the deputy governor of Khatlon declared that Tajikistan will not allow any opponents of the Taliban government to operate on its territory.
According to Reuters, the statement was made during a meeting with Habib al-Rahman Suhaib, deputy governor of Kunduz, where both sides emphasized that security cooperation, border control, and joint efforts to combat drug trafficking remain top priorities for their governments.
Tajik officials further warned that any anti-Taliban activity within Tajikistan’s borders will not be tolerated, stressing that all border regions are under strict surveillance to prevent infiltration or subversive operations.
The remarks signal a notable shift in Dushanbe’s approach toward Afghanistan, as Tajikistan—historically one of the few neighbors critical of the Taliban—appears to be pursuing pragmatic security coordination amid growing regional concerns over cross-border militancy and narcotics trafficking.
