OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Atlas, Targets Google Chrome Market Share
……………..

OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Atlas, an AI-powered web browser integrated with its popular chatbot, in a move challenging Google Chrome’s dominance, Reuters reported. The browser allows users to access a ChatGPT sidebar to summarize content, compare products, or analyze data across websites, while a paid “agent mode” enables the AI to perform tasks such as researching and completing online purchases autonomously.

In a demonstration, OpenAI showed how ChatGPT could locate a recipe and automatically purchase ingredients via Instacart. Atlas is currently available on Apple’s macOS, with Windows, iOS, and Android versions expected soon.

The launch comes as OpenAI seeks to leverage its 800 million weekly ChatGPT users and expand into AI-driven search, competing directly with Google and other AI browsers like Perplexity’s Comet, Brave, and Opera Neon. Alphabet’s shares fell 1.8% following the announcement.

Google has responded by integrating its Gemini AI model into Chrome and offering AI-enhanced search summaries. Despite competition, Chrome retains a 71.9% global browser market share as of September. Analysts note that OpenAI’s integration of AI chat into a browser could pave the way for future advertising revenue, potentially capturing market share from Google’s dominant search advertising business.
