The Louvre Museum in Paris was closed on Sunday after thieves carried out a daring daylight robbery, stealing priceless jewels before fleeing the scene. According to Agence France-Presse, the heist occurred within a brief 19-minute window between 9:30 and 9:49 a.m., as authorities continue to assess the scale of the losses.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said the three or four perpetrators completed the theft in just seven minutes, using a truck-mounted crane to access the museum’s Apollo Gallery. The group reportedly targeted two display cases containing heritage jewelry of exceptional value.
A security source said the thieves used a service elevator and small electric saws to break the glass and remove the items with precision. Culture Minister Rachida Dati confirmed the incident on X, saying no injuries were reported. She added that police and museum teams are working intensively to identify the suspects and recover the stolen pieces.
