Seventeen people were killed after a passenger bus crashed and overturned in northeastern Brazil, The Guardian reported. Police said the vehicle, carrying about 30 passengers, veered off course in the city of Saloá, in Pernambuco state, after departing from Bahia.

The driver reportedly lost control, crossed into the opposite lane, struck rocks, and then collided with a sand embankment, causing the bus to flip onto its side. Several passengers were injured and taken to nearby hospitals, though the exact number remains unclear.

Authorities confirmed that the driver suffered minor injuries and tested negative for alcohol. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Bahia Governor Jerônimo Teixeira expressed condolences on social media, saying his administration was assisting with rescue operations and victim identification. According to Brazil’s transport ministry, more than 10,000 people died in traffic accidents across the country in 2024.
