Uruguay Becomes First Latin American Country to Legalize Euthanasia by Law
……………..
Uruguay’s Senate has passed a law decriminalizing euthanasia, making it the first nation in predominantly Catholic Latin America to legalize the practice through legislation, Wavy news agency reported. The bill, approved by 20 of 31 senators after five years of debate, allows terminally ill or severely suffering patients to seek medical assistance in ending their lives.
The lower house passed the measure in August, and it now awaits implementation. Opposition came largely from the Catholic Church, while supporters hailed the law as a major step for human rights and individual choice. Vice President Carolina Cosse called the decision “historic,” reinforcing Uruguay’s image as one of South America’s most socially progressive countries.
The legislation permits euthanasia performed by healthcare professionals but excludes assisted suicide. It places no time limit on life expectancy and allows patients enduring incurable, unbearable suffering to apply, provided they are mentally competent and approved by two doctors. Minors remain excluded under the law.
From an Islamic perspective, both suicide and euthanasia are strictly prohibited, as life is considered sacred and only God has the authority to end it. Islam encourages patience, compassion, and medical care for the sick, emphasizing that suffering may carry spiritual meaning and reward.
