Historic Spanish Court Rules for Islamic Education in Balearic Schools

The Islamic Commission of Spain (CIE) has welcomed a ruling by the High Court of the Balearic Islands autonomous region that mandates the local government to provide Islamic religious education in certain public schools in the city of Palma.
According to Euronews, Ihab Fahmi, the commission’s educational coordinator, hailed the decision as a significant step toward religious equality and guaranteeing the rights of religious minorities.
The ruling is based on a 1992 agreement under which the Spanish government is obliged to offer Islamic education in public schools if there is sufficient demand from the community.
Human rights experts consider this court order a landmark decision in promoting religious education and respecting cultural diversity in Balearic schools, viewing it as a precedent for other regions across Spain.
