French Court Upholds Overturning of Nice Islamic School Closure

A French court on Friday confirmed the overturning of a prefectural order to close the Muslim school Collège Avicenne in Nice, according to Anadolu Agency.

The Marseille Administrative Court of Appeal upheld the annulment of the closure order, which had been initially signed in March 2024. The original order cited discrepancies in the school’s finances, including errors related to loans converted into a substantial donation and a loan the school provided to one of its donors.

The appellate judges ruled that the permanent closure of Collège Avicenne was “disproportionate”. They determined that the accounting errors and inaccuracies made by the association were of a minor nature and did not justify such a drastic measure. The judges noted that the prefect could have instead imposed a temporary closure.
