U.S. Report Warns AI Could Eliminate 100 Million Jobs Within a Decade

A new U.S. report, developed with the assistance of ChatGPT and released earlier this week, warns that artificial intelligence (AI) and automation could lead to the loss of nearly 100 million jobs across the United States over the next decade. The study raises growing concerns about a profound transformation in the global labor market and its potential impact on the middle class.

Titled “The War of the Tech Oligarchs Against Workers,” the report was overseen by Senator Bernie Sanders, a member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions. Sanders said the rapid advancement of AI threatens millions of mid-wage jobs while allowing major corporations to accumulate unprecedented profits at the expense of workers.

According to the report, automation could replace up to 89% of fast-food positions, 64% of accounting jobs, and 47% of truck-driving roles. It noted that U.S. companies are increasingly turning to AI systems and robotics to cut labor costs and improve efficiency.

Researchers based their estimates on ChatGPT’s analysis of over 700 job types and their susceptibility to automation. The report cautioned that failing to address this trend could trigger a major unemployment crisis that disproportionately affects the working class.

Some analysts, however, argue that the study overlooks the potential creation of “hybrid” jobs that combine human and technological skills. They contend that the net impact of AI on employment remains uncertain and continues to be debated among economists and policymakers.

Leading technology executives, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and Ford Motor Company President Jim Farley, have similarly predicted that AI could eliminate nearly half of white-collar positions in the United States within ten years. Senator Sanders concluded by urging Congress to ensure that workers benefit from the technological revolution rather than become its casualties.
