Indonesia Temporarily Bans Construction of Islamic Boarding Schools
…………….

The Indonesian government announced a temporary ban on the construction of Islamic boarding schools, known as pesantren, nationwide until they obtain official building permits (PBG). The decision follows the collapse of the Al-Khoziny Islamic School building in Sidoarjo, which caused significant injuries and damage.

Coordinating Minister for Community Empowerment, Muhymin Iskandar, known as “Kak Amin,” stated that the measure aims to protect students and staff and prevent similar accidents. All pesantren are required to update their permits before resuming construction or renovation projects. He noted that many of these schools are over a century old, including the Sidoarjo school, which is 125 years old.

To facilitate compliance, the government will waive administrative fees for religious educational institutions seeking permits, but emphasized that no new construction will be allowed without proper authorization. A national task force has been established to inspect existing pesantren buildings, review documentation, and coordinate with local authorities to ensure safety and structural standards are met.

The team will also provide training and guidance to school administrators on construction practices and safety culture. The ban and accompanying measures come amid public concern following the Sidoarjo collapse and reflect the government’s efforts to strengthen safety oversight and prevent future tragedies in religious educational institutions.
