A joint Iraqi-German archaeological mission has uncovered four new Assyrian winged bulls at the Nabi Yunus archaeological site in Mosul, marking one of Iraq’s most significant recent discoveries. Team member Ghassan al-Hassani said the mission is currently working to uncover the palace structures, halls, and related wall carvings before presenting them publicly.

Site director Zaid al-Obaidi noted that the fourth bull is uniquely made of detachable stone cubes, allowing it to be moved without damage. The previously buried bulls, first found in 1990, were re-excavated alongside the new find.

Archaeologist Raad Saud said excavation continues to recover damaged fragments. The site, believed to be part of King Esarhaddon’s Assyrian palace, has yielded rare inscriptions and artifacts illustrating daily life in ancient Assyria.
