Typhoon Matmo struck southern China on Sunday, disrupting travel and holiday activities in the island province of Hainan, Reuters reported. The storm made landfall on the east coast of Xuwen in Guangdong province around 2:50 p.m. local time, bringing winds of up to 151 kilometers per hour, according to the national meteorological center.

Authorities had canceled flights and ferry services from Saturday evening as heavy rain and strong winds swept across coastal areas. The typhoon’s arrival coincided with China’s eight-day National Day holiday, during which state media estimated 2.36 billion domestic trips. Matmo had earlier caused severe flooding in the Philippines before moving toward China’s southern coastline.
