Landslides and Floods Kill at Least 47 in Nepal, Seven in India
……………….
Heavy rains have triggered landslides and flash floods across Nepal, killing at least 47 people since Friday, Reuters reported. Officials said 35 people died in separate landslides in Ilam district, near the Indian border, while nine others remain missing after being swept away by floods. Three people were also killed by lightning strikes in other areas. Rescue operations are underway, according to Nepal’s disaster management authority.
In neighboring India, at least seven people were killed in landslides in the Darjeeling region of West Bengal, local media reported. Flooding has blocked major highways, disrupted domestic flights, and forced authorities to open all sluice gates of the Koshi Barrage as rivers rose above danger levels. The monsoon season, which runs from June to September, regularly causes deadly floods and landslides in the mountainous Himalayan region.
