Swedish MEP Proposal to Ban Hijab in EU Sparks Debate
…………….

A proposal by Swedish MEP Charlie Weimers of the Sweden Democrats to ban the hijab and niqab within the European Parliament in Brussels has sparked controversy. The plan would apply to all staff, service providers, and parliamentarians. Weimers argued the measure would support women against symbols of subjugation linked to non-democratic systems, framing it as a defense of EU values on equality and women’s rights.

The initiative faced sharp criticism from fellow lawmakers. Centre Party MEP Abir Al-Sahlani described it as discriminatory and contrary to human rights principles, emphasizing that targeting Muslim women violates the EU’s commitment to freedom of belief. She warned that such measures could marginalize women in the workplace, noting that many choose to wear the hijab voluntarily. The debate highlights tensions in Europe over balancing religious freedoms, individual rights, and gender equality.
