Dutch Immigration Proposals Face Uncertainty Ahead of Snap Election

The Netherlands has entered a two-month consultation on proposed asylum restrictions, though it remains unclear whether the draft legislation will pass into law, The Telegraph reported. The plan, introduced in September 2024 by the outgoing four-party coalition, sought to implement a two-year asylum crisis act to limit arrivals. Progress stalled due to legal challenges, prompting far-right leader Geert Wilders to withdraw his party from the coalition.

Wilders, who won the 2023 election, had demanded stricter measures, including a four-year freeze on asylum claims and a ban on Islamic schools. Next month’s snap election, triggered by the coalition’s collapse, has left Wilders’ party slightly ahead in polls. However, analysts say his chances of returning to government are slim, as former allies refuse to join him.
