At least 31 people were killed and more than 50 injured in a stampede during an election rally in Tamil Nadu, southern India, on Saturday. The event featured popular actor-turned-politician Vijay, whose presence drew a large crowd. Local reports said many attendees surged toward barriers near the stage to get closer to Vijay, triggering chaos that forced him to halt his speech.

Authorities confirmed that 58 injured people were taken to nearby hospitals. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the incident as “deeply saddening” and extended condolences to the victims’ families while wishing the injured a swift recovery. India has seen frequent stampede tragedies at political and religious gatherings, including deadly incidents earlier this year in Uttar Pradesh and January’s Kumbh Mela festival.
