Holy Karbala Nears Completion of Imam Hussein Crypt to Host 12,000 Worshippers

The Imam Hussein Holy Shrine in Holy Karbala announced the near completion of the Imam Hussein Crypt project, set to open at the start of the upcoming Islamic year. Located 15 meters below the Aqila Zainab Courtyard, the crypt spans 5,300 square meters and is designed to accommodate 12,000 worshippers for prayers, Quran recitations, and major religious gatherings.

Project engineer Hussein Redha Mahdi said construction has reached 90% completion, with mechanical, electrical, and structural works finished to high standards capable of withstanding heavy loads. The design features a spacious central prayer area surrounded by multi-level sections, integrated climate control, elevators, and stairways connecting directly to the sacred shrine. The facility is expected to open during the 1448 AH Arbaeen pilgrimage.
