Activists Demand COP30 Link Climate Justice to Reparations
————————–
Hundreds of environmental and human rights groups are urging the upcoming UN climate conference, COP30, in Brazil to focus its talks on justice and reparations for people unfairly affected by the climate crisis, colonialism, and slavery, according to Al Jazeera.

The coalition’s letter explicitly calls for organizers to highlight how climate justice is connected to reparations, citing the disproportionate impact of climate change on African, Afro-descendant, and Indigenous Peoples.

The demand is backed by recent rulings from the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which affirmed that industrialized nations have a legal obligation to take the lead in climate action due to their greater historical responsibility for emissions. The activists stress that rich countries’ funding commitments—such as the $300 billion Loss and Damage target—significantly lag behind the trillions needed by developing nations.
