UN Climate Chief: AI Has Risks But Can Fight Global Heating
————————————
The UN’s climate chief, Simon Stiell, believes that while artificial intelligence (AI) poses risks, it can be a powerful tool in addressing global heating, according to a report from The Guardian. Stiell emphasizes that governments must regulate AI to mitigate its “dangerous edges” while maximizing its “catalytic” potential for climate action.
He points to AI’s current use in improving the efficiency of energy systems, developing tools to reduce carbon emissions from industrial processes, and assisting in climate diplomacy. Stiell also highlights the importance of powering major AI platforms with renewable energy and innovating to improve energy efficiency, noting the immense energy consumption of large data centers.
Despite a significant gap between current climate plans and the Paris Agreement goals, Stiell remains optimistic. He notes that the world is “aligning with the Paris agreement,” citing the booming $2 trillion investment in renewable energy last year and the fact that most new renewables are now cheaper than new fossil fuel options. He believes that the increasing financial costs of climate inaction are beginning to impact even the wealthiest nations, which will serve as a strong motivator for change.
