French President Emmanuel Macron announced France’s official recognition of Palestinian statehood during the opening of the UN General Assembly in New York, DW reported on Monday. Macron said the decision reflects support for peace between Israelis and Palestinians, stressing that “the time for peace has come” amid escalating violence in Gaza.

He called for the immediate release of hostages held by Hamas, an end to bombings, massacres, and mass displacement in the territory. Macron added that opening a French embassy to the Palestinian state would depend on the release of the hostages. The move follows similar recognition by the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Portugal, adding to international pressure on Israel over the war in Gaza.
