Mount Merapi, one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes, erupted on Saturday morning, spewing a column of volcanic ash up to 1,000 meters above its peak, Anadolu Agency reported. The volcano is located in the province of West Sumatra.
The eruption was recorded on a seismogram for approximately 41 seconds. According to the Mount Marapi Volcano Post, the gray ash column was seen leaning to the south. Authorities have kept the volcano’s alert level at Level II and have advised the public, tourists, and climbers to stay outside of a 3-kilometer radius from the crater. There have been no reports of casualties or damage to infrastructure.
Mount Merapi stands at 2,891 meters tall and is one of about 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia, a country located on the “Ring of Fire.” This eruption follows a previous one on Wednesday, where the height of the ash column could not be recorded due to cloud cover.
