WMO Report Reveals Deepening Global Water Crisis
———————————-
A new report by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), titled “The State of Global Water Resources 2024,” indicates a deepening global water crisis marked by an increasingly unstable water cycle. The report, highlighted by Anadolu Agency, reveals that in 2024, only one-third of the world’s river basins experienced “normal” conditions, marking the sixth consecutive year of such an imbalance.
The document details a rise in extreme weather events and their devastating consequences, including severe droughts in the Amazon and southern Africa and excessive rainfall in Central and Eastern Africa and parts of Asia. The report also notes that global glaciers lost 450 gigatons of ice, contributing to a 1.2-millimeter rise in global sea levels and increasing risks for coastal communities.
WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo emphasized the critical need for reliable, science-based information and enhanced collaboration in data sharing. She stated that such efforts are crucial for effectively managing water resources and mitigating the impacts of these hazards.
