Artificial Intelligence Outperforms Human Lawyers in Drafting Contracts

A new study suggests that artificial intelligence (AI) tools can outperform human lawyers in drafting legal contracts, particularly in identifying hidden risks, Shia Waves Persian revealed.

According to research conducted by Legalbenchmarking.ai, AI-powered legal platforms demonstrated superior performance in preliminary contract drafting and risk assessment compared to experienced lawyers. The study evaluated performance across three main criteria: efficiency, reliability, and workflow support.

Results showed that human lawyers produced a reliably draftable contract in only 56.7% of cases, while several AI tools exceeded this rate. One advanced AI tool achieved 73.3%, surpassing the top-performing human lawyer at 70%. In risk detection, AI tools issued warnings in 83% of cases, whereas human lawyers did not flag any of these risks.

The research also noted that specialized AI tools did not significantly outperform general-purpose platforms such as GPT-4 and Gemini, which scored slightly higher in reliability (58.3% vs. 57.6%). The main advantage of specialized tools was seamless integration into legal workflows, including software like Microsoft Word.

Experts emphasized that combining human expertise with AI support enhanced reliability to 61.5%, highlighting that AI can augment—but not fully replace—human judgment. While AI excels at standardized contracts and risk identification, human lawyers remain crucial for interpreting complex legal nuances and regulatory frameworks.

The study concludes that the most effective approach for the future of legal practice is a collaborative model combining human and artificial intelligence capabilities.
