2.7 Million Students Begin School Year in War-Weary Yemen

More than 2.7 million students in Yemen have started a new academic year amid severe challenges facing the country’s education system. The conflict, now in its tenth year, has left schools short of classrooms, textbooks, and teachers.

In Taiz, students were seen sitting on the ground under worn-out coverings, lacking even basic facilities such as blackboards. Teachers said overcrowding and the absence of proper classrooms make it difficult to manage lessons effectively. According to UN reports, more than 3,000 schools have been rendered unusable, while textbook printing has stalled and teacher numbers have sharply declined.

The Yemeni Teachers’ Union noted that many educators have retired without replacements, while others have been lost to displacement or death. Despite these hardships, authorities continue efforts to sustain education, as students persist in their pursuit of learning and a brighter future.
