Severe Floods and Storms Kill Hundreds Across Asia-Pacific
…………
At least 17 people have died in Bali, Indonesia, after the island’s worst flooding in more than a decade, The Guardian reported. Heavy rain last week triggered flash floods and landslides, with most victims swept away by rising waters. Eight bodies were recovered in Denpasar, and rescue teams continue to search for the missing. More than 385mm of rain fell within 24 hours, damaging bridges, submerging roads, and forcing hundreds to evacuate.
Scientists warn that climate change is intensifying rainfall across the region, while deforestation and overdevelopment are worsening the impact. Elsewhere in Asia, India is facing severe monsoon floods, with Punjab enduring its worst inundation since 1988.
Across the country, landslides and flooding have killed hundreds, while in Pakistan, more than 900 people have died since late June and millions have been displaced. In Australia, Sydney recorded its wettest September day on record, with 122mm of rain and two tornadoes reported in New South Wales.
