Nepal Protests Leave 51 Dead After Prime Minister’s Ouster
…………
Nepalese authorities confirmed on Friday that the death toll from violent protests earlier this week has risen to 51, with more than 1,300 people injured. The unrest erupted in Kathmandu and other cities following widespread corruption allegations and the government’s decision to ban social media platforms.
The demonstrations, led by students and activists from the “Gen Z” movement, called for former Chief Justice Sushila Karki to be considered as prime minister. Mounting pressure forced Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli to resign.
Protesters torched government buildings and attacked politicians’ homes, prompting authorities to impose a nationwide curfew to restore order. Observers warn that Nepal is entering a fragile political phase, with concerns of renewed unrest and violence unless swift measures are taken to address public grievances.
