Sudan Doctors Warn of Famine Risk in Besieged El Fasher
………….
Sudan’s Doctors Union has warned that El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, is facing a severe humanitarian crisis as fighting intensifies. The group described conditions in the city as a “full-scale genocide,” citing a blockade imposed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since May 2023 that has cut off food and medical supplies.
More than half a million civilians are at risk of starvation, while an estimated 900,000 others face worsening shortages. Most hospitals are no longer functioning due to repeated shelling. The Sudanese army vowed to break the siege, reporting gains in the south, though residents said artillery fire continues. El Fasher remains the army’s last major stronghold in Darfur and a key hub for humanitarian operations.
