More than 1,000 people were reportedly killed in a landslide triggered by heavy rains in the Darfur region of western Sudan, Anadolu Agency.
According to the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A), the armed group which controls the area, the disaster struck Tarsin village in the Marra Mountains on August 31, claiming the lives of the entire population. Only one person is reported to have survived.
As of Tuesday, the Sudanese government had not confirmed the casualties.
The landslide adds to the region’s vulnerability to extreme weather events, particularly during the rainy season, with remote mountainous communities often hardest hit.
