Torrential rains, floods, and strong winds in Yemen’s Marib province during August have led to the deaths of three internally displaced persons (IDPs), injured two others, and caused widespread damage to displacement camps, according to a preliminary government report released Sunday.

The Executive Unit for IDP Camp Management in Marib reported that a total of 2,944 displaced families were affected by the severe weather conditions. Of these, 464 families suffered complete loss of shelter, while 2,480 experienced partial damage.

The majority of the damage was caused by heavy rains and flash floods, impacting 2,281 families, while windstorms caused significant harm to 563 others. Damage included the destruction of temporary shelters—tents, huts, and plastic sheeting—as well as food supplies, water tanks, sanitation systems, and personal belongings.

Camps in Marib city were hit the hardest, with 1,895 families affected, followed by Al-Wadi district (825 families), Raghwan (164 families), and Harib (60 families). Authorities have urged humanitarian partners to increase emergency support, rehabilitate shelters, and implement long-term strategies to protect camps from climate-related disasters such as floods and fires, especially given the region’s harsh desert conditions.
