The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported on Thursday that flash floods and heavy rainfall in eastern Sudan’s Al-Rahad locality, Gedaref State, have displaced approximately 2,800 people and damaged 660 homes. Of these, 560 were completely destroyed, while 100 were partially damaged.

The flooding, which occurred on Wednesday, was triggered by the overflow of the Al-Rahad River, severely affecting villages including Dar Al-Salam, Bazoura, and Umm Al-Khair. Displaced families have sought shelter within nearby host communities, according to IOM field teams.

This incident follows the deaths of 14 people due to flooding in Sudan’s Nile and Sennar states earlier this week, where hundreds of homes were also destroyed. Sudan typically experiences seasonal flooding during the rainy months from June to October.

The disaster comes amid a broader humanitarian crisis, as the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces since April 2023 has already resulted in over 20,000 deaths and displaced nearly 15 million people, according to UN and local sources.
